What 'line-down' really means

In manufacturing, line-down describes the moment a production line has to stop because a part, tool or material is not where it needs to be. It might be a single component that has run short, a tool awaiting repair, or a delivery that slipped. Whatever the cause, the line cannot run without it.

The phrase carries real urgency because the cost of a stopped line is rarely just the missing part. Idle equipment, waiting staff and knock-on delays down the schedule all add up quickly, so the priority becomes getting the right item to the floor as fast as it can safely travel.
