Bigger than
the rules allow.
When a load runs past standard dimensions, it stops being a simple booking and becomes a planned move with its own rules and preparation.
When a load counts as abnormal
Most freight fits comfortably within the size and weight a vehicle is built to carry. An oversized or abnormal load is one that does not: it might be too long, too wide, too tall or too heavy to travel as ordinary freight, whether that is a single large structure, a long beam or a piece of plant.
The point at which a load becomes abnormal is not about it being merely big. It is about exceeding the limits that ordinary vehicles and routes are designed for, which is why these moves are treated differently from a standard pallet or a full van and need handling on their own terms.
Planning, notice and escorts
An abnormal load is planned, not just booked. The route is worked out in advance to suit the size and weight, avoiding obstacles a normal vehicle would clear without a thought, such as low bridges, tight junctions or weight-restricted roads. That planning takes time, so giving plenty of notice is part of getting it right.
Depending on the dimensions, a move may need advance notification to the relevant authorities and, where required, an escort to accompany the vehicle. These steps exist to keep the load and other road users safe, and they are arranged as part of the job rather than left to chance on the day.
Why it needs a conversation
An abnormal load is not something to drop into a standard booking form and hope for the best. The dimensions, the weight, the access at both ends and the route all have to be understood before anything is committed, and that is best done by talking it through rather than guessing.
Sharing the full picture early, the size, the weight, how it loads and where it is going, lets the right vehicle, kit and plan come together. If your move is heading this way, the best next step is to get a quote and talk it through so nothing is left to surprise.
Priced around the plan
Because every abnormal load is different, there is no off-the-shelf rate. The job is priced per job and on the route, taking in the planning, any notice or escort and the vehicle involved, with a fixed quote before the driver sets off once the move is properly mapped out.
