When temperature is part of the job

Some consignments are sensitive to heat and cold in a way that affects whether they are still fit for purpose on arrival. Medical and laboratory samples, certain pharmaceuticals and fresh or perishable food all sit in this category, where staying within a range is part of the goods arriving usable rather than spoiled.

For these, temperature is not a nice-to-have, it is a condition of success. A delivery that is fast but has let the contents warm beyond their limit has not really succeeded, which is why this kind of work asks for a little more thought than an ordinary parcel.

Packaging plus speed

Two things protect temperature-sensitive goods, and they work best together. The right packaging, cool boxes, gel packs or insulated containers appropriate to the contents, holds the conditions for a window of time. Speed then makes sure the journey fits comfortably inside that window.

A direct run is the natural partner to good packaging. Because a dedicated vehicle carries the consignment straight to its destination with no depots or sorting in between, the total time in transit is kept short, which means less of the protective window is used up and less temperature exposure overall.

What to tell the operator

Good handling starts with a clear brief, so it pays to be specific when booking temperature-sensitive work. The more the operator knows, the better the run can be set up around the needs of the goods rather than around a generic delivery.

Say what the goods are, how they are packaged, any range they need to stay within and how time-sensitive the journey is. With that picture the job can be planned for a quick, direct run.
