Downtime is the bill:
why AOG speed pays.
A grounded aircraft burns money by the hour, which is why the transport that ends the wait is never the expensive part of the equation.
How the costs stack up
A grounded commercial aircraft costs its operator money in several directions at once: the lost revenue of the flights it should be running, compensation and rebooking for displaced passengers, crews going out of hours, and parking or handling charges while it sits. Industry estimates for a grounded airliner commonly run to tens of thousands of pounds per hour once the knock-on effects are counted.
Smaller operators feel it differently but no less sharply — a business jet, survey aircraft or air-ambulance that cannot fly is a contract not being fulfilled, and often a client relationship on the line.
Why the delays compound
Aviation runs on rotations: today's late departure is tonight's out-of-position aircraft and tomorrow's cancelled first wave. An AOG event rarely costs one flight — it costs a chain of them, and the longer the part takes to arrive, the further the disruption spreads.
That compounding is why AOG desks think in minutes. Recovering a schedule that has slipped by two hours is routine; recovering one that slipped by twelve is a different week.
The transport maths
Set against those numbers, the cost of a dedicated vehicle running a part across the country immediately — rather than waiting for a scheduled service — is a rounding error. The expensive option is almost always the slower one.
The same logic applies to weekends, nights and holidays. A part released at 2am on a Sunday should be moving at 2am on a Sunday, because the aircraft's costs do not pause for the calendar.
Being ready before it happens
Operators who handle AOG well tend to have the response arranged before the event: a known transport desk, agreed handover points and a driver network that covers their bases. If aerospace is your world, our AOG courier service is built for exactly that call — and the AOG courier guide explains how a run unfolds.
