A box body with a tail-lift

A Luton van is the one with the big square box behind the cab, often with that distinctive overhang above the roof. That box body gives a generous, fully enclosed load space, and the standout feature is the tail-lift at the back, a hydraulic platform that raises and lowers heavy items between the ground and the deck.

That tail-lift is what sets it apart from an ordinary van. It means a heavy or bulky load does not have to be lifted by hand or hauled up into the vehicle. The platform does the work, which makes loading safer and far quicker, especially for anything one person could not manage alone.

Capacity and what it carries

A Luton typically carries around 1,000kg and takes roughly four standard pallets, with plenty of enclosed volume for bulkier goods. Where there is no forklift

The tail-lift really earns its place at sites with no forklift, which is most homes and plenty of smaller premises. Where there is no machine to lift a pallet or a heavy item onto the vehicle, the tail-lift becomes the loading method, doing the job that a forklift would otherwise have to.
