What a tail-lift is

A tail-lift is a hydraulic platform fitted to the rear of a van or lorry. At the touch of a control it lowers to ground level, a load is placed or wheeled onto it, and it raises smoothly up to the deck so the item can be moved inside. On delivery, the whole process runs in reverse.

It exists to solve a simple problem: getting heavy things between the ground and a high load floor without a struggle. Lifting a loaded pallet or a bulky item by hand is impractical and unsafe, and a tail-lift removes that obstacle entirely, doing the heavy lifting that would otherwise need a machine.

When you need one

The clearest sign you need a tail-lift is heavy goods heading to a site with no forklift. Most homes, many shops and plenty of smaller premises have no lifting equipment at all, so a pallet or a weighty item simply cannot get onto or off a vehicle without the lift built in.

It comes into its own for loaded pallets, white goods, furniture, machinery and equipment, anything too heavy to manhandle safely. If you are sending a substantial load and you are unsure how it will be unloaded at the far end, that uncertainty is usually the cue to ask for a tail-lift vehicle.

Pairing it with two people

A tail-lift handles the vertical lift, but it does not move the load across the ground for you. For genuinely heavy or awkward items, it pairs naturally with a two-person delivery, where the second person provides the extra hands to position the load where it is actually wanted rather than leaving it at the kerb.

Vehicles such as the Luton van and many 7.5-tonne lorries carry a tail-lift as standard, so it is usually a matter of choosing the right vehicle for the job.
